On Monday the 2nd of March, beloved French supermini- the Peugeot 208, was honoured with the most prestigious motor vehicle title there is- Car Of The Year.
The highly esteemed award ceremony is usually a public affair with a live audience present but this year, due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Geneva International Motor Show 2020 was cancelled just days before it had been set to occur. The show was conducted in private with only necessary individuals present and was live-streamed to the general public. The determination of a winner is based on a points system, with a panel of 60 expert motor journalists from 23 different countries. The ceremony has been running for 56 years now, with the Car Of The Year is the most illustrious European automobile award.
This year's lineup of contenders for Car of The Year was quite impressive. The finalists were comprised of the following vehicles - BMW 1 Series, Tesla Model 3, Peugeot 208, Toyota Corolla, Renault Clio, Porsche Taycan, and Ford Puma.
Following the results, that were collected via the points system that is in place for Car Of The Year, the Peugeot 208 came out with a total of 281 points, a respectable amount more than its runner ups the Tesla Model 3 (242 points) and the Porche Taycan (222 points).
Peugeot was professional and humble with their win, with brand chief executive Jean-Philippe Imparato quoted saying:
“This trophy underlines the excellence of the work and great commitment of all the teams of the Brand and the Groupe PSA…. We love cars, and we recognise the Car of the Year jury is made up of experts, so we are honoured to win… It’s a big surprise and a big pleasure for us.”
We believe what pushed the Peugeot 208 into its victorious position is the vehicles’ availability choice of models in Petrol, Diesel and Full Electric. What's even more impressive and certainly didn't go unnoticed by the jury is it’s impressive fashionable design, array of technology features, and vehicle space that are the same across each model. The battery in the Full Electric model, the e-208, was purposely designed and positioned so boot space goes uncompromised and is identical to that of the Petrol or Diesel preference.
